We know that you probably just finished your fall exterior maintenance checklist, but it’s now time to get started preparing for winter! Your skylight bears a great deal of weight during the winter months, when snow and ice can accumulate rapidly. Here are some of the key tasks you should take care of before the first snowfall on your skylight.
Clean It Up
Just like your windows and every other part of your home’s exterior, you should take the time to clean up your skylight once a year. On the outside of the skylight, you should soak it with a mild soap mixed with water. This will loosen stuck-on debris and dirt. Rinse that away and then use a glass cleaner to make the surface clean and sparkling. Finish the job by wiping things up with a microfiber cloth or squeegee and you’re all done!
Check for Leaks
Leaks are often not discovered until snow melting directly on top of your skylight starts to drip through. It’s a good idea to check for leaks before that happens, so take the time to examine the drywall around your skylight. Are there any leaks? Is there any discoloration or bulging? These are all signs of damage, and you should call Jim Amos Contracting to have the flashing repaired. This repair is also best tackled when it’s warmer out, so the chilly winter air isn’t whistling into your home.
Make Sure the Motor Works
If you have a skylight operated electronically or with motor shades, make sure that the motor is in working order. If it’s not quite up to the task, have some regular maintenance performed by the team at Jim Amos!
