During the brutal winter cold, having a roof of any kind over our heads can be a relief. But even the best roofs will run into frequent problems during this unpleasant season. Stay warm all winter long and deal with these residential roofing issues before they can become bigger problems.
Preventing Ice Dams
Ice dams will happen before you even realize they are forming. However, thinking ahead is the best way to stop them. That said, once winter hits it may already be too late. The best time to prepare for future ice dams is in the summer when it’s warm, and in the fall before the cold takes over. These clumps of ice can cause more severe residential roofing issues – your gutters collapsing, your roof shingles disintegrating, and unsightly water leaks and stains gathering on your walls and ceilings.
Getting Rid of Icicles
Icicles may be pretty to look at, but they can be just as dangerous as an ice dam. These icicles are more residential roofing issues you’ll want to prepare for before it’s too late. You’ll want to remove icicles as soon as you can, so make sure a ladder is handy because they may be too high up to reach. Why do these icicles form? Your roof and attic might not ventilated properly. Double check to make sure your skylight isn’t making things worse.
Dealing with Condensation
Condensation and frost will build up on any glass that is left exposed to the cold. This glass could be on your home’s windows, or your car’s windshield. Condensation, if left unaddressed, can eventually cause major water damage. Again, excessive condensation is more than likely due to a problem with your ventilation. Check on the various spots around the house where a vent might be present, such as in the laundry room, in the bathroom, and near a fireplace.
