Bad weather can be unsettling enough on its own, but if you’re trying to ride out a bad storm and suddenly discover you have a roof leak it can make the weather seem even worse. A leaky roof can cause all sorts of damage to your home if it’s not managed and repaired as soon as possible. If you have a roof leak, these tips will help you minimize the damage until your roofing contractor gets there.
Look for Wet Spots
Where there is a roof leak, there will be at least one wet spot somewhere on your ceiling. It will likely start near HVAC vents or light fixtures. After an hour or two, the water will eventually find more ways to come through. If there is a bulge in the ceiling or a particularly wet spot, poke a hole in the middle and let the water drain into a container or bucket. Poking a hole probably sounds unwise, but giving the water somewhere to go can minimize damage because enough water can actually cause your ceiling to collapse.
Where is it coming from?
Next, you will need to figure out where the water is coming in. If your home has an attic, that is likely where it is coming from. When searching, keep in mind that the entry point may not precisely line up with the wet spot. If the foundation of your roof is sheets of plywood, when water seeps in it is usually along the seams between the sheets so check there first.
Managing Until the Pros Arrive
Once you figure out where the water is coming from, you can temporarily patch it until your contractor arrives. Your local home improvement store should have roofing cement or roofing tape. You can safely apply these products to the inside of your roof while you wait out the storm.
