Over the last several years, many homeowners have primarily been accessing their homes through the door in the garage. Because of this, the front door doesn’t get a whole lot of attention. Here’s how to tell if it’s time for a new front door for your home.
Update the Design
Sometimes you just want a new front door so that you can update the look of your home. For example, if you’re getting new windows, shutters, roofing, or siding, it would make sense to also get a new door so that everything can match. A cohesive outer design can really boost your curb appeal!
Dents or Rust
If you have a metal door, it is possible that it can get dented or rusted as it ages. If you have pets who scratch at the door or kids who may bump into it with various sporting equipment, this can increase the likelihood of dents and scratches. These types of damage can cause paint and sealant to chip, leaving exposed metal that is vulnerable to rust.
Insect Damage
If your front door is made of wood, it could be vulnerable to various types of insect damage. Carpenter bees like to drill in and nest. Termites will eat away at the wood. Ants will find any opening they can to move into. Plus, varnish can become chipped by accident and if you don’t notice it right away, this can lead to other types of damage.
Block Out the Weather
If your front door is becoming old or worn out, it may be less efficient at keeping outside air where it belongs. Your door, along with your windows, is supposed to seal your home and keep hot and cold outdoor air away. A decrease in the effectiveness of your door can cause your home energy costs to rise as your HVAC system will have to work harder to maintain your preferred temperature.
