Replacing the roof of your home is an excellent investment that not only protects your family but increases the value of your house. However, the process of getting a new roof installed comes with a series of (short-lived) inconveniences. To best weather the storm or getting a new roof you simply need to do a bit of prep-work. Follow this set of rules and you’ll be closer to enjoying your new roof with little disruption to your everyday life!
Remove Items From The Roof
If you haven’t gotten around to taking down the Christmas lights or have satellite dishes or cable antennas make sure to take them down before your contractor arrives. While they will most likely be happy to remove any items you’re no longer using, leaving that to them delays the start of the project.
Prepare The Yard
Before your contractors begin make sure to remove any items from directly around your home. Anything that could block access or be damaged by falling debris should be moved until construction is finished. Potted plants, outdoor furniture, and grills should be moved far away from the house or stored. Likewise, overhanging tree branches should be removed and cars should be kept in the garage or down the street. Lastly, the day before work begins mow your lawn as short as possible. That way debris can be identified and cleaned up easier.
Protect Your Interiors
All the banging on the roof can have effects on your interiors as well. If you have an attic storage area you’ll want to make sure to cover valuables with sheets or tarps. While the construction is going on it’s possible for dust and plaster to get knocked loose. You may need to sweep and vacuum the attic once construction has completed. You also may want to remove any hanging or delicate items from walls and shelves. Store these items in a stable, secure location as the banging may knock them off the walls.
Alert Relevant Parties
Replacing a roof can be quite the noisy project, plus it’ll involve lots of unusual traffic to your neighborhood, so giving your neighbors a heads up is a very good idea. Not only will they appreciate the warning, but they may be willing to help by letting you park your car in front of their home until your driveway is safe. While your adult neighbors will be understanding, if you have children or pets in your home you may need to consider giving them some time with a grandparent or at daycare. The large amounts of noise and new people can be stressful for pets and small children who can’t comprehend what’s going on. A good doggy daycare and babysitter may be ideal for the duration of construction.
Help Your Contractor With Their Needs
It’s likely that your contractor will need access to a few things around your home, power outlets and running water for example. While they may bring a power center and battery operated tools it’s more than likely that they’ll need help finding an outlet or two as well.
Stay Vigilant
Last, but not least, the process of getting a new roof can cause new dangers to be lurking around your home. The presence of debris, construction equipment, loose nails, and more can leave those around your home open for opportunities to get injured. Keep yourself and those around you on high alert until clean up has occurred.
